Club News Clydesdale Harriers veteran road runners are again taking the credits with John Hanratty winning the Scottish Veteran Harrier Club’s 5K Road Race over the flat course from the Play Drome in Clydebank on Wednesday night in 16:55 to record his first win of the season. In seventh place and first Over 60 to cross the line was Bobby Young in 18;00. David Mitchell in twentieth place of the 31 finishers clocked 20:31. Exactly a week earlier, in the SVHC 1314 Race at Bannockburn over a course of 13140 yards Peter Rudzinski was ninth of the 18 runners in a time of 49:12.

Mark Rudzinski went to Kirkintilloch on Thursday and finished second of the 150 competitors in 32:09 for the 10K course. Peter Rudzinski in forty first with a time of 42:21 was second Over 50 veteran and Pamela McCrossan two places back was timed at 42:37 to be second Lady Veteran. Three runners and three prizes was a good night’s work for the club.

Lee Cassidy was racing in England for a Glasgow Select on Sunday and after leading all the way and after an opening lap of 56 and a 600 metre time of 1:26 he was passed in the finishing straight for a time of 2:01. He also ran in the 1500 with happier results. Kicking ferociously from 700 he held on to win in 4:30. He also ran for the winning 4 x 400 metres relay team.. At this time of year, Angus McInroy is one of the busiest of club members. This week started out with a meeting in Eton where he won the Under 20 Shot Putt with a best of 14.42 metres and a second in the discus with 42.87 which was less than a metre behind the winner. Then on Wednesday in the Invitation Throws Meeting at Grangemouth he saw Garry Hagan win the Senior Discus with 45.92 metres before he himself won the Under 20 Shot Putt with 14.19 metres and the discus with 40.05.

Then on Sunday in the Young Athletes League at Coatbridge a team depleted by the holiday season performed very well in the final match of the season. In the 100 metres for Under 13 athletes Jamie Breslin had a good run to be second in 13.5 seconds. At Under 15 age group Johnathan Farrell was fourth in 12.5 seconds which equalled his personal best and Craig Graham was fourth in the B String in 14.1. Both boys are first year in the age group and against the best athletes from the top Young Athletes teams of Kilbarchan, Giffnock North and Pitreavie their running was excellent. Robert Wylie had his best 100 metres of the season when he was timed at 12.2 seconds in the Under 17 100 metres. He also ran in the 200 metres where his time of 24.5 was a lifetime best. The Under 15 duo of Johnathan Farrell and Craig Graham were third and fourth respectively with Johnathan’s 25.5 equaling his best and Craig’s time of 29.3 was just outside his best ever. In the Under 17 400 metres Jordan Gray was sixth in the A race and Robert Allison was third in the B race.

Both boys ran in the 800 metres where Robert was fourth A runner in 2:04.5 and Jordan was fourth B in 2:16.1. Michael Kinsella was the sole representative in the Under 15 800 metres where he was fifth in 2:52. Jamie Breslin was second in the A 800 metres for Under 13’s in 2:27 and David Brown was third in the B race in 2:58.3. Sam Galbraith was fourth in the 1500 metres for Under 13’s and the club had no runners in the other Under 15 events. The Under 13 Boys 4 x 100 relay team (of Sam Galbraith, David Brown, Cameron Watts and Jamie Breslin) was third and the Under 15 team of Michael Kinsella, Craig Graham, Cameron Watts and Johnathan Farrell) was second.

Johnathan also did well in the shot putt where he was second with a personal best of 9.20 metres. Jamie Breslin only managed one putt in the Under 13 Shot Putt where he was fifth with 6.73 metres. He had started his day at the high jump where he was second with 1.45 metres with Tommy O'Neill second in the B event with 1.20 metres. In the Under 17 long jump, Robert Wylie had another season’s best of 5.17 metres in the A string with Robert Allison doing 4.30 metres before heading off to the 400 metres. Megan Reid was in three events in the West Dunbarton girls team. She was second in the 75metres hurdles, fourth in the shot putt with a best of 5.99 metres and cleared 3.57 in the long jump.

Scottish Schools Championships
Grangemouth,
11th/12th June 2004

The championships were fought out in superb weather on both days and the club's athletes all did well. Angus obliged with two wins and Jolene had a good run in her first race of the season. There were personal bests by both Mark Doris and Johnathan Farrell who had a very successful championships. It was his first championships since taking up the sport seriously less than a year ago and to make two finals, pick up a standard badge for the 200 metres and just miss out on a medal in the 200 was good. In the 200 final he was third coming into the straight and at the end the times of second, third and fourth were 25.23, 25.25 and 25.31. A medal missed by six one hundredths of a second!

Club News In the County Sports Finals which took place on Wednesday at Scotstoun there were several very good performances by club members representing their schools. Ryan Savage running for St Columba’s High School, had a superb afternoon when he took two gold medals less than 45 minutes apart. First of all he won the third year boys 400 metres in a new personal best of 56.1 seconds then after a short break he was back on the track for the final of the 200 metres which he won after a titanic battle in the home straight in a time of 25.4. Biggest smile of the afternoon was from St Andrew’s first year Natalie Quinn who was fourth in her first ever 1500 metres race in 6:05.5. She was also back on the track soon afterwards and this time stepped down a distance or two to be third in the 200 metres in 30.1 seconds. School mate Hayley Nicol also took bronze in the Final of the 200 metres. Second Year pupil Hayley was timed at 29.0 seconds and had earlier been fifth in the 100 metres in a time of 14.2. Out of the medals but performing well were many who had qualified for the second day from Heats run the previous week. These included Braidfield High School’s Karen Kenny who performed well in the First Year Long Jump with a best of 3.43 metres. Stacey Donohoe was third in this event with 3.75 metres. Megan Reid running for St Andrew’s High School in the first year 800 metres faded towards the end and finished fifth of the eleven starters. From St Columba’s High School Barry John McCarte qualified for the Final where he was timed at 13.4 seconds and Leanne Meldrum had a poor day by her standards which started when she left her spikes at home and had to race the sprints in her trainers. She qualified for the Final of the 100 metres where she was sixth in 15.0 seconds and also the 200 metres where she was also sixth in 29.5 seconds – a mere 0.5 from the bronze medal.

There were many school titles won by regulars at club training sessions and these included a virtual clean sweep of the St Andrew’s girls events where Megan Reid won the first year girls championship from Natalie Quinn, Hayley Nicol took the second year title from Sinead Griffin and in the third year Louise Meechan won from Michaela Hagan. Louise has been away from training for a wee while now but all the rest are seen at training sessions at Scotstoun on a Tuesday and Thursday.
